Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Vosne-Romanee 2016 750ml
Cote de Nuits, Burgundy, France

A rich, silky red, exuding rose, strawberry, cherry and cinnamon aromas and flavors. Harmonious and long, with fine intensity midpalate through the finish. Very pure and long, echoing the fruit and floral notes in the aftertaste.

As I noted in the introduction, one of the anomalies of the 2016 frosts was that they hit the vineyards up on the slopes, rather than those down on the flats, so several villages level parcels were completely spared, while the premier and grand crus above them were decimated. As a result, the Mongeards’ Vosne AC is a lovely wine in 2016, offering up a fine bouquet of black cherries, cassis, espresso, Vosne spice tones, gamebirds, dark soil and a touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and quite black fruity in personality, with a very good core, suave tannins and impressive length and grip on the well-balanced finish. A very fine example in the making. Drink between 2020-2045.
A subtle but not invisible application of wood frames the spicy aromas of plum, violet and a hint of tea. There is a bit more volume and richness if less evident muscularity to the medium weight, fleshy and caressing flavors that culminate in a highly refreshing and balanced finish. If this can add a bit more depth with a few years of cellaring it should merit the upper end of my projected range.
Character of the wine
Wines from the Vosne Romanée appellation are all of excellent quality, as all the vineyards are located on sites and soils that are highly favourable to the production of good wines. Their distinctive quality is the elegance. Structured by discreet tannins and an unobtrusive acid content, they are wonderfully mellow. They have substance and linger long on the palate. Very aromatic, they highlight scents of cherries, strawberries and woodland undergrowth in an elegant combination of fruits and spices.
